PREPARE FOR COLD WEATHER!
Here are 10 Cold Weather Tips from Torrington Toyota
.) Make sure that you are checking your tires often! This includes the wear of tread, tire pressure, or any bubbles/gashes in the rubber. Rain or SNOW can make driving more difficult and/or dangerous if there are issues with your tires!
.) Monitor your engine's performance! A maintained car is a HAPPY car. The last thing you want to do is be stranded on the side of the road when it's chilly outside. A Fresh tune up and a change of filters will give you the best fuel economy as well as power efficiency that your car will offer.
.) Keep a close eye on your belts & hoses! Look for any signs of fraying, wear, dry rot, or if they are loose. Replace to prevent leaking fluids and to make sure all components are operating properly.
.) Check ALL of your fluids! Watch your levels of oil, antifreeze, brake, transmission, power steering, and windshield washer fluid to make sure your car will continue to run & be maintained properly, to prevent any issues down the road.
.) Have your brake system inspected! With the New England hills, stopping power is vital. Be sure to have a mechanic inspect your brake pads, rotors, and brake lines to guarantee a safe commute.
.) Check HVAC System (heating, ventilating and air conditioning) Not only will having well working air conditioning and heat provide comfort on your journey, but it can also keep you safe by defogging the glass on frosty or rainy days.
.) Inspect your battery! Corroded terminals can prevent the battery from getting a good connection, which can prevent any power accessories from working, or your car from starting. Consider carrying jumper cables with you just in case you run into any battery issues. Replace when needed.
.) Vehicle Lighting! It is a good idea to take a walk around your vehicle to be sure that all your lights will turn on and are functioning. These include headlights, tail lights, front & rear blinkers, hazard lights and brake lights. You always want people to see you coming or slowing and indicate turning especially in bad or dark weather, as well as for your own benefit in seeing the roads and lanes properly.
.) Inspect the steering and suspension system! This covers shock absorbers, struts and chassis parts such as ball joints, tie rod ends and other front end components. This may prevent tire wear and make your ride more comfortable and safe.
.) Have your exhaust system checked! Exhaust fumes can be dangerous. It's a good idea to have your exhaust inspected so that any damage, holes, or leaks can be repaired immediately.
